Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Fishing and Boating Services. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Annapolis, MD (Anne Arundel County)

POSITION DUTIES

This position provides oversight to analytical projects within Fishing and Boating Services and performs advanced data analyses and fishery stock assessments in support of Departmental decisions concerning the conservation and utilization of fisheries resources. The position is directly involved in the quantitative evaluation of Chesapeake Bay and coastal Atlantic fishery resources, and other related technical issues in support of decision making. Job responsibilities include leading analytical stock assessments for important commercial and recreational Chesapeake Bay fishery resources; conducting advanced statistical research and mathematical model development to address single and multi-species population dynamics; providing oversight for the design of surveys and sampling programs that provide important fishery and biological information; assisting in the development of analytical approaches for the planning and evaluation of Department management strategies; pursuing analyses related to the technical components of Fishery Management Plans; and reviewing and evaluating the technical merit of federally funded research proposals, reports and projects conducted by staff of the Maryland Fishing and Boating Services. The position will assist in the development of reports and formulate defensible conclusions based on the interpretation of analytical and research results.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a doctoral degree from an accredited college or university including fifteen credit hours in research methodology, theoretical or applied statistics and measurement theory.

Experience: Three years of post doctoral experience in statistical research.

OR:

Education: Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university including nine credit hours in research methodology, theoretical or applied statistics and measurement theory.

Experience: Six years of post master’s experience in statistical research.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Statistician classifications or Statistician and Intelligence Officer  specialty codes in the Statistics field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with statistical package R and Automatic Differentiation Model Builder (ADMB)

Familiarity with fishery stock assessment models
