Main Purpose of Job
POSITION DUTIES
Serves as advisor to the Chief Animal Health for matters pertaining to poultry health and regulatory programs in the State, particularly in regard to Avian Influenza. Leads and coordinates all MDA field and monetary assets in support of poultry health programs. Represents the Agency to parties inside and outside of Maryland. Manages federal cooperative agreements concerning poultry health as assigned.
Responsible for conduct of all Animal Health regulatory, emergency, and other service operations for the Delmarva region of Maryland and Southern Maryland. Supervises field staff, provides justifications for budgets and other assigned resources. Provides oversight for Swine program regarding implementation of federal and state regulations, importation and diseases management. Conducts animal health operations in the region across the spectrum from routine to emergency. Represents the Agency to local. other Maryland and out of state agencies in matters pertaining to poultry and animal health. Manages poultry related cooperative agreements or other statewide programs pertaining to poultry health.
If Contract or Federal Poultry Specialist/Pathologist is not available, performs as Acting Laboratory Director, responsible as backup to the Salisbury Laboratory Director for the delivery of full service poultry diagnostics in the primary poultry laboratory in the agency system and tri-state regional delivery of partial service livestock and other animal health diagnostic services.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Possession of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or its equivalent.
Experience: Three years of general veterinary medicine experience, at least one year of which must have included field experience involving inspection, diagnosis or treatment of a variety of animal types.
Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in veterinary preventive medicine classification or veterinary preventive medicine specialty codes in the veterinary medical science field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required and experience and education.
