Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Eastern Region. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Chesapeake Forest/Pocomoke State Forest, Snow Hill, MD (Worcester County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service/Eastern Region is currently accepting applications for a Natural Resources Technician I. Services required of this position will be performed on lands owned by the State in the areas of forest management, forest data collection, tree planting, forest protection, wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire, and wildlife management. Essential job functions will include inspecting forest harvests, establishing and maintaining state boundary lines, identifying and prescribing the proper treatment to tree diseases and predators, and assisting higher level professional staff in developing and implementing natural resource management plans. Maintenance of equipment, as needed, and operation of the following equipment used in the above duties may apply: chainsaw, brush saws, leaf blowers, tractors, ATV’s, and other heavy equipment. Candidates must be willing and available to work evenings and/or weekends for wildland fire suppression response. Candidates must be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.

Experience: None.

Notes: 

1. Additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.   

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in the field of Forestry, specifically with forest measurements and tree identification
Knowledge or experience with logging operations and inspections
Experience with boundary line recovery and marking

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
