Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Leonardtown, MD (St. Mary's County)

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to serve on the Charles and St. Mary's County Project as a paraprofessional and technical support in the areas of forest management, forest protection, urban and community forestry, law enforcement and information and education services on private and public lands to support the Department's main goal of inspiring Marylanders to live in harmony with nature and to protect the Chesapeake Bay. Examples of job duties include assisting with collecting technical forest data for stewardship plans, forest fire protection, assist with tree planting programs and implement urban forestry programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.

Experience: None.

Notes: 

1. Additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2.  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.   

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience conducting forest inventory data collection
Experience with tree identification
Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
Knowledge/experience with wildland fire suppression
Experience with heavy equipment operation
Knowledge/experience with tree trimming standards
Experience with urban tree planting programs or open land reforestation projects
Experience with aerial photography interpretation

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
