Main Purpose of Job

The Aviation Mechanic Chief Inspector (Chief Inspector) is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring an inspection program which ensures Maryland State Police (MSP) aircraft are maintained in conformity with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and manufacturers specifications. The Chief Inspector's duties and responsibilities are directly related to the safe operation of MSP aircraft. Many of these duties are specified and required by the FAA to maintain the FAA Approved Repair Station held by the Maryland State Police Aviation Command, and to assure the safety of flight is not compromised. Ensures critical aviation safety standards are adhered to by maintenance personnel. The Chief Inspector provides the important function of assuring conflicts between quality control and production do not become an issue of safety. The Chief Inspector supervises the Aviation Maintenance Quality Assurance Inspector (AMQAI) classification.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Determined by Federal Aviation Administration regulations under the licensing requirements for aviation mechanics with inspection authorization.

Experience: Five years of experience repairing twin turbine powered rotary-wing aircraft.

Note:  Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the Aviation Machinist Mate classifications or Aviation, Maintenance Management, or Aircraft Maintenance specialty codes in the Aviation Maintenance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.  

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Thorough understanding of the applicable Federal Aviation Regulations used to determine air worthiness, repair, or alterations of an aircraft.

2. Management of an FAA certified repair station or military equivalent.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Pursuant to Federal Aviation Administration regulations candidates appointed to positions in this classification will be required to possess a FAA Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics License with current FAA Inspection Authorization and must list their license number and date of issue on the application.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Applicants for positions with the Department of Maryland State Police will be subject to a complete criminal background investigation and a polygraph examination before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection of the applicant.

2. Some positions in this classification are assigned duties which will require the individual to be examined by a physician. After an offer of employment, applicants for such positions will be given a medical examination to certify the ability to perform the essential job functions.

3. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in on a 24 hour basis, and therefore, will be required to provide the employer with a phone number where they can be reached. Working weekends and holidays is required.  Employee also subject to emergency call out. This is an Emergency Essential Employee.

4. Employees in this classification must have access to an automobile for use on official business in the event a State vehicle cannot be provided. Standard mileage allowance will be paid for use of a privately owned vehicle.

5. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process for this recruitment will involve a review of each application.  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on an eligible list in the BEST, BETTER or QUALIFIED category.  The list will be used by the hiring manager to select the individual to fill the vacancy.

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of this position.
