Main Purpose of Job

Participates with uniformed members of the Honor Guard Funeral Details IAW MDANG Reg. 600-25 and Maryland Article 65, Section 6. Represents the State of Maryland and Military Department in actions related to Honor Guards for Burial Services of Military Veterans.

POSITION DUTIES

Performs TAPS at military funerals and ceremonies

Performs tasks as pall bearing, folding and/or presentation of the United States Flag according to standard procedures

Executes military drill and ceremony maneuvers

Operates, maintains and safeguards military weapons

Travels frequently within an assigned geographical area

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None.

Note: Candidates may substitute experience as a uniformed honor guard at burial services for veterans on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

Six (6) months of experience playing Taps using trumpet or bugle.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification, with exception of buglers, are required to meet the following criteria, per National Guard Bureau regulation 600-25:

a) Be active or retired members of the Maryland National Guard or retired
in good standing from the Armed Forces of the United States.

b) Successfully complete an eight hour gun safety and usage weapons class.

c) Successfully complete one hundred and forty hours of honor guard training including eighty hours of attendance at the Army or Air Force Honor Guard School.

2. Employees in this classification must have completed Military Basic Training.

3. Employees in this classification are required to successfully pass all physical fitness standards, appearance and training requirements set forth in Army Regulation 600-9 and Air Force Instruction 40-502, effective April 2002.

4. Employees in this classification will be required to bear firearms, and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.

5. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in
accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for
Illegal Use of Drugs.

6. Employees in this classification must not be under disciplinary action and are subject to background investigations, including regular criminal history checks.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience as presented on your application and as they relate to the requirements of the position. You may be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire. Therefore, it is important that you provide complete and accurate information on your application.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
