Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Health's Behavioral Health Administration is seeking Licensed Practical Nurses who will provide practical nursing care to patients/clients referred to the Intake Unit, a 24-bed forensic inpatient facility which conducts evaluations and treatments for court-ordered individuals who are diagnosed with a psychiatric illness. The Intake Unit is a high acute psychiatric unit, located on the grounds of Spring Grove Hospital Center in Catonsville, Maryland.

Licensed Practical Nurses on the unit will perform nursing procedures, such as administering prescribed medications, monitoring patients' vital signs, obtaining specimens for laboratory testing, and assisting in physical examinations. This position will also perform patient medical treatments, provide health education counseling to patients and assist those patients in performing daily living activities.

Finally, this position will document and maintain required charts, reports and individual health records on patients and, as directed, keep physicians, registered nurses and other designated personnel informed of such information. He/she will also practice behavior modification techniques designed to assist patients/clients in their treatments, and perform other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the Maryland Board of Nursing, under the licensing requirements for Practical Nurses.

Experience: One year of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Nursing classifications or Nursing, or Health Care Specialist specialty codes in the Nursing field of work, on a year-for-year basis, for the required experience. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have experience working with psychiatric patients.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Practical Nurse from the Maryland Board of Nursing.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be require to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

3. Employees may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardiopulmonary resuscitation training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the facility with a telephone number where they can be reached.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing, in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
