The department is committed to enhancing our Information Technology capabilities. We are recruiting for a Computer Information Services Specialist I position.

LOCATION OF POSITION

7800 Harkins Rd Lanham, MD 20706. The Department of Housing and Community Development Headquarters is located in Prince George's County across from the New Carrollton Metro stop.

POSITION DUTIES

The main purpose of a Computer Information Services Specialist I is to provide client-side and remote assistance to departmental computer users. This position requires knowledge of operating systems, troubleshooting tools, network topologies, communication protocols, servers, clients, network operating systems, and security. Technical skills include monitoring the Help Desk tracking system, and diagnosing and resolving problems with PCs and their peripherals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience responding to and resolving help desk calls from users of computers, or operating computer equipment for the purpose of data entry, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, data base or other applications.

Notes: 1. Additional experience responding to and resolving help desk calls from users of computers, or operating computer equipment for the purpose of data entry, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, data base or other applications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Nine credit hours in personal computer applications at an accredited institution may be substituted for the required experience.

3. Completion of a certification program in computer repair, such as Microsoft A+ or an equivalent program, may be substituted for the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Cyber and Information Systems classifications or Cyber and Information Systems specialty codes in the Information Technology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six months of professional experience as a help desk technician or technical assistant
  • Six months of experience performing system integration
  • COMPTIA A+, COMPTIA NET +, and/or Microsoft Certified Professional certification

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development is not sponsoring new employees in application of the H-1B Visa at this time due to budgetary constraints. Federal regulations prohibit H1B Visa candidates from paying sponsorship fees, all sponsorship fees must be assumed by the potential employer.

SELECTION PROCESS

The examination will consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience related to the requirements of these positions. BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits. Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who has worked 106 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
