POSITION DUTIES

The Comptroller of Maryland's Revenue Administration Division, located in downtown Annapolis, is seeking an Accountant Lead for the Revenue Accounting section.

This dynamic position is responsible for lead level of work examining, analyzing, and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles in order to modify and maintain accounting systems, prepare financial reports or statements, and give financial advice to management. Employees in this classification assign, review and approve the work of and train lower-level Accountants.

Candidate must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, ability to change priorities without notice, be detail orientated and the ability to work independently and be self-driving to ensure success.

PLEASE NOTE:  May be requested to work evenings and/or Saturdays during Tax Season. For the purpose of this statement, Tax Season shall be defined as the period beginning January 15th and closing May 15th.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing.

Experience: Three years of experience examining, analyzing and interpreting accounting systems, records and reports by applying generally accepted accounting principles.

NOTES:

  1. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with thirty credit hours in Accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing, for the required education.
  2. Applicants who have met the requirements for admission to the CPA examination prior to July 1, 1974 will be considered to have met the educational requirement referenced above.
  3. Possession of a certificate as a Certified Public Accountant or a Master's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
  4. Applicants may substitute one year of professional auditing experience for one year of the required experience.
  5. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the Accounting Officer classification or Financial Management specialty codes in the Accounting field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.  

** For education obtained outside of the U.S., you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service. If you possess a degree obtained outside of the United States, please submit a detailed, course-by-course evaluation report from one of the U.S. equivalency evaluating members identified at http://www.naces.org/members.html.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Qualifying applicants are subject to an oral interview. Prior to appointment, the employee must successfully undergo a comprehensive background investigation including a review of criminal, MVA and tax records; and determination of legal authorization to work in the United States or under the United States Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. This background check is comprehensive and may involve fingerprinting. Upon initial appointment OR promotion to a position in the State Personnel Management System, an employee is required to serve an initial six- month probationary period. This probationary period may be extended an additional six months under certain circumstances at the discretion of the appointing authority.
