Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to support the Program's primary requirements for implementing the federal Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). The incumbent evaluates treatment adequacy at public water systems; reviews engineering proposals for capital improvements; meets with public water systems as needed to discuss water quality and treatment needs; reviews water quality monitoring reports submitted by public water systems; and provides recommendations to assist water systems in correcting water quality problems and/or improving water treatment operations. The incumbent works with other divisions in the Program to discuss engineering strategies for treatment, and to discuss concerns pertaining to source water quality and availability.  This position requires the incumbent to drive a State vehicle.  If you maintain an out-of-state driving license, you must provide a certified copy of your driving record for the appropriate Motor Vehicle Administration at time of interview.  Individuals must maintain a driver's license with no more than 5 points on their driving record in order to drive a State vehicle.

The incumbent periodically may conduct field work and may be exposed to inclement weather and walking to remote areas to assess a public water system source.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or architecture from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None

Notes:

1. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least 20 credits in engineering and two years performing engineering or architectural work in pollution control, waste remediation, resource conservation, environmental protection, public health and safety, or related areas may be substituted for the engineering degree.

 2. Professional Engineer or Professional Architect registration in the State of Maryland or in a state with comparable requirements may be substituted for the education requirement.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Engineering and Architecture classifications or Engineering and Architecture specialty codes in the Environmental field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

It is preferred that the selected candidate has the following: 
 
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical, Civil or Environmental Engineering:
  • Experience using Microsoft Office on Windows-based PC and /or Apple iPad;
  • Coursework and/or experience in water supply and water treatment systems;
  • Experience using computerized technologies to compile and write reports.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in twenty-four hours a day, and, therefore, may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
