Main Purpose of Job

The Physician Program Specialist will report to the Director of the Medical Benefits Management Administration within the Maryland Department of Health. The incumbent will allocate 100 percent of his/her time to Medicaid-related issues. The position will be responsible for medical decisions regarding clinical issues for Medicaid recipients, developing and implementing program policy and quality measures, developing clinical guidelines for coverage and coding issues, representing the Medicaid Program at internal and external standing committees and advisory groups and representing the State at the Office of Administrative Hearings in appeal cases.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a degree in medicine from an accredited college or university.

Experience: As required for certification in an area of medical specialization by an American Medical Association Specialty Board.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Medical Corpsman and Physicians classifications or Nursing or Physician and Medical Services and Special Corpsman Officer specialty codes in the medicine field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have:

- clinical experience

- experience in a leadership and management position in the health care industry

- experience making strategic decisions, leading staff and engaging stakeholders, including physicians and other health care providers

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Applicants must be certified by an American Medical Association Specialty Board in an area of medical specialization.

2. Applicants must be licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine under Maryland State Law. A copy of the current license must be attached to the application.
