Main Purpose of Job

This is a professional position serving as specialist for environmental literacy programs and products aligned to the Maryland Next Generation Science Standards for students PreK-12.

POSITION DUTIES

Provides technical assistance to local school systems and schools in the implementation of environmental science literacy programs; prepares and delivers presentations, workshops, and other professional learning activities for a variety of audiences, including central office staff, school-based administrators, teachers, environmental education providers, and federal and state agency personnel; conducts interagency committee work around statewide environmental literacy; collaborates with local school systems and external partners to implement the requirements of Project Green Classrooms; plans and participates in Project meetings and activities; provides technical assistance in the development of best practices, products, and processes aligned to the Maryland Next Generation Science Standards and Maryland’s Environmental Literacy Standards to meet the Environmental Literacy goal of the Chesapeake Bay Program; assists with the development and implementation of Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE); administers the Maryland Green Ribbon Schools Award program in collaboration with the US Department of Education; assists Science staff in furthering the goals of the science team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:  Master’s Degree or equivalent 36 credit hours of post baccalaureate course work in Education, Educational Administration/Supervision, Science, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.   

EXPERIENCE:  Four (4) years of professional administrative, and/or teaching experience in or affiliated with an education program including two (2) years of experience in coordinating or administering an education program or service directly related to the position. Experience with a PreK-12 science or environmental science program is preferred.

NOTES:

  1. Two years of additional experience as defined above may be substituted for the Master’s Degree.
  2. Possession of a Doctorate in a field related to the position may be substituted    for one year of the experience requirements.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One year experience in public education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of Maryland Next Generation Science Standards, Environmental Literacy COMAR regulation, and Maryland’s Environmental Literacy Standards; knowledge of Project Green Classrooms; knowledge of trends, regulations, and policies affecting instruction and assessment in science and environmental literacy; skill in managing multiple tasks and time sensitive deadlines; skill in organizing multiple schedules; ability to work as a team member and establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Proof of eligibility to work in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act and possible travel throughout the State are required. Any misrepresentation of academic or experience requirements for this position may result in non-selection or termination of employment.
