LOCATION OF POSITION

This is a statewide recruitment. Please select all of the counties in which you are willing to work. Current openings are available in Howard County (Jessup) and Washington County (Hagerstown).

Main Purpose of Job

A Maryland Correctional Enterprises (MCE) Officer Trainee is the entry level of work involving the security, training, and supervision of adult inmates engaged in technical and production work of an industrial shop located in a correctional institution. The main purpose of this position is to provide training and supervision to an inmate work force in the production of MCE products in the graphics plant.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Responsible for assigned production process operating with full independence and reviewing the work of trainees
  • Set up and break down various machinery and make minor repairs as required.
  • Train/instruct inmates in proper use of production machinery
  • Follows established and uniform production and inmate training record system
  • Inspects work-in process and finished goods
  • Trains and instructs inmates in Fire Safety, Equipment Safety and Personal Safety as related to their trade
  • Responsible for distributing tools to inmate workers and collecting them at the end of the shift
  • Participates in inmate head counts at beginning and end of shift, as well as lunch periods

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience:  One year of experience in technical and production work in a graphics and/or printing environment or one year of experience as a correctional officer.

Notes:

1. Specific educational requirements and other selection standards are set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code and are listed in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs. 

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1- Prepress, press, and binding and finishing experience are desirable.

2- Experience supervising or leading employees is desirable.

3- Computer experience, including intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and MS Office Suite.
