Main Purpose of Job

This is a clinical level position with the Division of Rehabilitation Services, Rehabilitation Technology Services Program that specializes in the application of computer based and other assistive technologies that when applied, promote employment, economic self-sufficiency and/or independence of individuals with disabilities.

POSITION DUTIES

Responsible for performing assistive technology services in the Rehabilitation Technology Services Department. Perform detailed and comprehensive clinical assessments of individuals with disabilities to determine potential need for and benefit from computer based and other assistive technology.  Provide assessments of home, training and work sites to determine most appropriate application of assistive technology and related accommodation strategies.  Performs the following Assistive Technology Support Services and Training for individuals with disabilities, as appropriate: Setup and orientation of computer systems and related assistive technology and conduct group and/or individual orientation and assistive technology hardware/software training.  This position provides technical assistance to DORS rehabilitation counselors. Performs case management duties and completes required documentation including written reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s Degree is required.  A Master’s Degree is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years of administrative, librarian, teaching, or rehabilitation work in education, library or rehabilitation programs.

NOTES:

1.  Additional experience as defined above directly related to the position may be substituted for the required Bachelor's Degree at the rate of one year of experience for one year of education.

2.  Possession of a Master's Degree may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

3.  The above requirements are set by the Maryland State Department of Education in accordance with Education Article, Section 2-104.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:   

  • Experience with installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and training on assistive technology.   
  • Experience in developing training curriculum.    
  • Certifications such as RESNA'S Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), ACVREP's Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist for People with Visual Impairments (CATIS), Vendor Certifications (JAWS, Zoom Text, etc.) or certificate/degrees in AT or Special Education such as CSUN's Assistive Technology Applications Certificate (ATACP).
  • Experience with Assistive Technologies, including but not limited to video and optical magnifiers, Screen Magnification and Screen Reading programs, Standalone Readers, Voice Recorders (commercial and adaptive).
  • Experience with existing and emerging technologies, software, and their accessibility settings, including but not limited to MAC OS, Apple IOS, Android, Windows OS, Microsoft Office and Internet Browsers.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds, stoop, bend, and climb. 

 

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
