Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System. The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 200,000 active members and more than 150,000 retires and beneficiaries.

The Benefit Administration Division of the Maryland State Retirement Agency is recruiting for seven (7) full-time, summer internship positions.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of these positions are, to support staff with the heavy workloads experienced by the Agency during the months of May, June, July, and August. During this time the Agency is closing our files for the prior fiscal year (7/1/18 - 6/30/19) and opening our files for the new fiscal year (7/1/19 - 6/30/20) and managing high volumes of new enrollments. Duties will include reviewing pension payroll data to resolve data errors, reviewing and processing new enrollment applications, retirement applications, and refund applications, assisting with reconciling productions jobs, preparing mailings, filing completed work, and other office support functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: In order to be considered for an internship, you must: * Have graduated from an accredited high school, and * Currently be pursuing a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: None.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Currently pursuing bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Communications, Economics, Finance, Management, Public Administration, or related field.

Note: Duties will include reviewing pension payroll data to resolve data errors, reviewing and processing new enrollment applications, retirement applications, and refund applications, assisting with reconciling productions jobs, preparing mailings, filing completed work, and other office support functions. We have Three positions for Benefits Processing; Three positions for Data Control; One position for Member Services. Final pin is pending HFE approval.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants may be evaluated based on education, training and experience in relation to the requirements and qualifications listed for the position. You must possess the minimum qualifications in order to be selected for a State job. Therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application. Report all related education.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must be provided prior to hire. 

Successful candidates will be placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year. This list will be used by the hiring agency to select employees. Applicants must be legally authorized under the United States Immigration Reform Act to be hired.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
