Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the Administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System.  The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ defined benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with additional plan components, covering approximately 193,000 active members and more than 150,000 retirees and beneficiaries.  The Agency is currently recruiting for three (3) Accounting Summer Internship positions for its Finance Division.

$10.46 - $13.25

Main Purpose of Job

These summer internship positions will assist the Finance Division performing various accounting related duties in the General Accounting, Payroll, Finance and/or Office Services Units.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must: 

Be a current college freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student;

Be majoring in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, or related field. 

Experience:   Minimum of six months' prior work experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Six or more credits in accounting;  

Working knowledge and hands on experience using Microsoft Word and Excel; 

Prior work experience in an office environment;

Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

Strong mathematical aptitude;

Eager to learn and motivated to be a team player.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

Applicants may be evaluated based on education, training and experience in relation to the requirements and qualifications listed for the position.  You must possess the minimum qualifications in order to be selected for a State job. Therefore, it is essential that you provide complete and accurate information on your application. Report all related education, experience, dates and hours of work. Credit is given for relevant part-time, temporary or volunteer experience based on the number of hours worked per week. All information concerning your qualifications must be included on your application and submitted by the closing date. We will not consider incomplete applications.

Successful candidates will be placed on the employment (eligible) list for at least one year. Applicants must be legally authorized under the United States Immigration Reform Act to be hired.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
