This position is emergency essential personnel. The shift will be primarily Sunday - Thursday 2:30 pm - 11:00 pm, covering other days/shifts as needed.

Main Purpose of Job

Assess, plan, implement, and perform enrichment services that sustains the vocational goals of individuals with severe disabilities at the Workforce and Technology Center (WTC). Supervise the operation and staff of the Enrichment Services department.

POSITION DUTIES

Plan, design, implement, and evaluate a daily enrichment services program of activities that provide accessible and unique opportunities for WTC consumers. Enhance, implement, manage, and provide Travel Training program to teach consumers how to commute using public transportation. Monitor consumer behaviors, and mediate disputes and conflicts. Ensure health and safety of consumers. Serve as department supervisor on the evening shift. Serve as Sunday evening shift supervisor for entire Center and provide supervisory oversight for emergency procedures. Serve in this capacity as assigned or in absence of supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation with a major in therapeutic recreation from an accredited college or university.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years of experience performing therapeutic recreation with individuals with severe disabilities.  

Notes:

  1. Current certification as a Therapeutic Recreator from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification may be substituted for the education requirements.  
  2. Experience as a professional therapeutic recreator under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist, licensed Physical Therapist or certified Activity Therapist, which included the responsibility for clients’ assessments and the planning, implementation and evaluation of clients’ recreation therapy treatment in a mental health or developmental disability setting may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis. Experience assisting in these responsibilities will not be accepted as qualifying experience.  
  3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Physical Therapy classifications or Physical Therapist and Medical Specialists specialty codes in the therapeutic field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: therapeutic recreation theory and practice; leisure education and psychology; the limitations, capabilities, and problems common to individuals with a variety of disabilities.  

Ability to: carry out recreational activities; assess behavior, aptitude and performance of consumers; motivate consumers to participate in activities; establish and maintain working relationships with consumers, supervisors and staff; communicate effectively with employees, volunteers, supervisors, consumers and  the general public; and perform CPR.  

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.  
  • Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and maintain current certification.  
  • Employees in this classification are subject to call-in and, therefore, will be required to provide the employing agency with a cellphone number where they can be reached.
