Introduction

Maryland Public Television, which is commonly known by its familiar name "MPT", is a public television network that comprises six television stations that broadcast throughout the entire state of Maryland as well as into the District of Columbia and parts of Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. MPT is the only statewide broadcaster in Maryland. MPT is a member of the Public Broadcasting Service.

Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of the position is to conceive, research, write, direct, produce, edit and deliver high-quality, professionally executed Public Television multimedia programs, specials, non-broadcast projects and segments as assigned.

This is a Special Appointment position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Create appropriate budgets for projects as assigned.
  • Create accurate long- and short-range production timelines for segments, programs and series. 
  • Book production facilities and personnel for location production using production timeline, budget and workflow design as accurate guides. 
  • Book location travel facilities, transportation, etc. as needed for location production.
  • Edit to professional standards rough and fine cut programs on AVID non-linear systems. 
  • Supervise and approve production of segments and other program elements on-location.
  • Collaborate with the EP & MD to meet and maintain editorial mission, program balance and continuity.
  • Supervise freelance and staff production teams.
  • Independently shoot, write, edit and deliver digital shorts for MPT Digital Studios as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree in film, media, mass communications, or a related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:  Five (5) years of experience producing in broadcast and new media.

For education obtained outside the U.S., a copy of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service must be provided prior to hire.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualifications.    

  • Experience delivering high-quality broadcast programs on-budget and on-deadline, and managing the day-to-day operations of a series and a series staff
  • At least 1 year of experience managing a television series and its staff
  • Exceptional staff management and inter-personal communication skills
  • Strong story-sense, broadcast-feature producing, writing and editing skills
  • Strong production-planning and –execution skills
  • Expertise in the operation of avid media composer software
  • A strong background in journalism

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
