POSITION DUTIES

This position will inspect milk and frozen dessert processors, manufacturers, distributors, producers (dairy farms), milk haulers, and equipment. This position will also evaluate and test milk pasteurization equipment and processes, in order to verify compliance with federal and State laws, regulations and policies which govern milk safety and security in Maryland. Additionally, this position will take samples; provide training and consultation; conduct investigations, surveys and studies; and, take action against adulterated and misbranded milk, milk products and frozen desserts.

By ensuring that milk, milk products and frozen desserts are produced in a safe and sanitary manner, in addition to sharing expertise, this position will protect public health. Furthermore, by ensuring that Maryland's dairy industry members comply with the provisions of the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO), as specified in State law and regulations, this position will enable them to ship and accept milk and milk products of high sanitary quality in interstate commerce. Finally, this position will work closely in cooperation with dairy industry personnel, as well as with local, State and federal agencies.

This position will evaluate and train dairy industry personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Environmental Sanitarians, under the certificate of eligibility requirements for Environmental Sanitarians.

Experience: Four years of environmental health work experience in the promotion, control and maintenance of environmental health.

Notes: 

1. Applicants may substitute a Master’s degree in Public Health or Environmental Health Sciences for one year of the required general experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a Commissioned Officer in Environmental Engineering classifications, or Environmental Engineering specialty codes in the Engineering and Science field of work, on a year-for-year basis, for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have experience inspecting food facilities, as well as experience working in, or inspecting, dairy processing facilities or dairy farms. 

The desired candidate should have the flexibility to travel throughout the State of Maryland.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Environmental Sanitarian from the Maryland State Board of Environmental Sanitarians. A photocopy of current registration must be attached to the application form (MS-100).

2. The licensure requirements are pursuant to State Environmental Article, Title 11, COMAR 26.07.01 through 26.07.04. The Secretary of the Department of Budget and Management cannot accept any substitutions.
