Main Purpose of Job

This position supervises the planning, assigning, scheduling and inspection of the work of the housekeeping employees at a large scale facility. This facility is operational 24 hours, 5 days per week. This location consists of dormitories, classrooms and administrative offices. Must perform inventory operations with regard to linens, cleaning and equipment items and must maintain a budget for those inventoried items. Must also schedule major housekeeping projects for large conferences and oversee the responsibilities of the custodial training program in the absence of the instructor.

POSITION DUTIES

Planning and assigning work areas and inspecting those areas to ensure that the duties have been performed. These duties include vacuuming, shampooing carpets, cleaning windows, floors, furniture, and bathrooms. Maintains records and prepares reports on supplies and equipment; estimates needs and requisitions supplies and equipment for housekeeping duties.  Collects soiled linens and distributes clean linens and disposes of medical waste in accordance with the Commission of Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) requirements; and standards established within 29.CFR1910.1030 Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens and COMAR 26.13.11 Special Medical Waste.  Must also maintain material safety data sheets on various cleaning agents to ensure compliance with both OSHA and CARF standards.  

Schedules work in various training areas, headquarters, and the Workforce and Technology Center so that normal operations of the areas are not interrupted.  Schedules and supervises special cleaning activities and prepare for large conferences outside of the normal work hours.   Assigns and inspects the work performed by the custodial program students in the absence of the instructor.  Provides general instruction and demonstration to students requiring assistance.   Provides on the job training and guidance to all housekeepers regarding cleaning techniques, linen operations and general safety practices.  Demonstrates the use of power equipment such as buffers and scrubbers and teach staff the proper handling of commercial waste disposal.   Counsels employees regarding sick leave or performance related issues, monitor work performance and perform bi-annual PEP assessments, etc.  Attends department head meetings and make recommendations to the Branch Chief on operational issues and frequently confer with immediate supervisor.  Maintains updated position description information on housekeepers and completes performance appraisals. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

None.

Experience:

Four years of experience performing housekeeping activities in a State facility or other public building.

OR

Four years of full-time experience as a housekeeper in a school, hospital, hotel, or other institution, to include one year of supervisory experience.

SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have at least one year of experience maintaining and requisitioning supplies.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience using Microsoft Word and with using a calculator.
