Main Purpose of Job

A Maintenance Mechanic Senior is the advanced level of work in the building and grounds maintenance trades. The Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) has four (4) buildings on the campus of Spring Grove Hospital Center (SGHC). This position provides general maintenance tasks such as:  changing light fixtures, changing filters on incremental units, hanging pictures/bulletin boards, maintaining accurate work order maintenance requests, performing preventative maintenance, construction and/or repair work at the semi-skilled level in several trades; preparing walls for painting, receiving and relocating furniture requests, inspecting buildings and grounds for adherence to institutional safety and sanitary regulations, and reporting maintenance requests to the appropriate party, i.e., General Services and Spring Grove Hospital Center (SGHC) Maintenance Division. This position is required to lift heavy objects such as furniture and/or equipment, have reliable transportation to travel around the campus, use a ladder and basic tools such as hammer, screw driver, tape measure etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    Eighth grade.

Experience:  Four years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades, three years must be in the trades of electricity, plumbing, steam fitting, refrigeration or air conditioning.

NOTES:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in any of the maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a major in Building Maintenance or a related field for up to three years of the required general experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
