Main Purpose of Job

This position functions as a Central Mailroom Courier for the Department of Human Services' Division of Administrative Operations Central Offices (DHS/DAO), by assuring the safe and prompt delivery, collections and processing of all written communication for the Department's Central Offices.

POSITION DUTIES

Sorts and prepares mail for the post office/UPS, and determine the most cost-efficient method for mail delivery. Delivers and collects mail along a designated route between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Processes incoming and outgoing mail. Weighs and prepares letters and packages for outgoing delivery and sorts incoming mail for inter-office delivery. Logs incoming certified, insured mail, registered, UPS and Fed-Ex packages utilizing DAO’s internal log system. Delivers mail to the warehouse loading dock for afternoon postal (USPS) pick-up. For the Central Distribution Center (CDC) manually sorts mail, assists with loading and unloading bulk mail. Performs other duties incidental to the moving and processing of mail and related handling equipment. Keeps logs of mail transported to ensure accuracy for the supervisor’s approval, by using completed DHS/DAO Courier Service Request form. Maintains daily DHS/DAO Fleet Unit Fleet Master mileage form (VLMILOO) and State Vehicle Pre-Trip Inspection Checklists to be completed before vehicle are taken daily and given to DGS Guard before leaving garage.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of the eighth grade.

Experience: One year experience performing clerical duties in an office environment. 

Notes:  

1. Additional experience performing clerical duties may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate may be substituted for six months of the required experience.

3. Six months clerical training with three courses in subjects such as keyboarding, clerical math, word processing, spreadsheets, data base, graphics presentation, proofreading, or office etiquette may be substituted for six months of the required experience.

4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Administration classifications or Administrative, Clerical or Office Services specialty codes in the Clerical Support field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications.

Available to travel daily.

At least one year experience in a mailroom/courier setting.

A Driver's License valid in the State of Maryland.

A Driver's Record with less than 3 points.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds or more if needed and able to bend, carry, kneel and climb.

Successful candidates will be placed on the employment (eligible) list. The resulting list may be used for future vacancies with this agency or other state agencies.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
