Introduction
The Air and Radiation Administration, Radiological Health Program is recruiting for a Health Physicist I. This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). This recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies for this position/function only. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year. Persons interested in future vacancies within this classification must re-apply.

POSITION DUTIES
The main purpose of this position is to perform inspections and investigations and other regulatory activities to protect the public and occupational personnel from unnecessary exposure from x-ray producing radiation machines at dental and veterinary facilities. The incumbent will assist in the generation of statistical reports for the various inter-and-intra agency requirements. This position assists with escalated enforcement cases, including initiation of Notices of Violation and investigations. Duties also includes responding to radiation emergencies, which range in severity from a leaking small radiation device to a full scale Nuclear Power Plant disaster. The incumbent in this position will occasionally work after hours and on-call 24/7 for Radiological Emergencies and occasional overnight travel and stays are required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credit hours in mathematical, physical or biological sciences.
Experience: One year of experience in performing the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards.

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in performing the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree in radiation safety, radiological health, health physics, or a related radiation control field from an accredited college or university for the required one year of experience.
3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree in a mathematical, biological or physical science from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, or a related scientific discipline.

Experience generating databases reports;

Customer service experience interacting with internal and external customers in a business setting;

Strong process and analytical skills;

Strong computer skills and a proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel and Powerpoint;

Detailed oriented, strong written and oral communications skills;

Willingness to work as a team member.
