On your application, please indicate which region you are willing to work.  This is seasonal work with variable hours, approximately 250 hours for the season.  Contractual employees are paid for actual hours worked only.  Mileage will be reimbursed at the State of Maryland reimbursement rate (currently 57.5 cents per mile, subject to change.) when traveling within  your assigned region.

This is contractual employment and does not include benefits such as leave time, holidays, or health insurance.  




Maryland Department of Agriculture - Apiary Inspection Program - Annapolis, Maryland

Work will be performed in two areas:

Carroll, Frederick counties and

Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's counties

Main Purpose of Job

Field Aide position to assist with inspection activities of the Maryland Department of Agriculture's Apiary Program.


Conduct inspection of honey bee colonies for diseases, pest and pesticide losses, recommendations of appropriate measures for honey bee colony management and control of bee diseases, accurate record keeping/office work as required to document inspection actions and assist with licensing activities.

Work will involve interaction with the public, exposure to biting/stinging insects, ticks, poison ivy, high temperature and humidity and other outdoors exposure. Employees may be required to use personal protective equipment.


Candidate must be at least 18 years of age. High School Diploma or GED required.


This is specialized work, and a thorough understanding of honey bee colonies and beekeeping programs is required to carry out inspection activities.  A minimum of three years of successful, progressively responsible experience in a practical beekeeping program or in beekeeping inspection is required.


A driver's license valid in Maryland is required.

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
