Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (“System”). The System is a defined benefit retirement system covering governmental employees within the State of Maryland. The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ defined benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with over 50 different rule sets.  The System has over 397,000 participants (customers), including 192,000 members who are actively employed and participating in the System, 165,000 payees who receive a monthly payment from the System, and 40,000 vested members who are no longer actively employed but have earned a benefit that will become payable at a future date.

The Administration Division, Benefits Processing Unit has an opening for an Administrative Officer I position,  This position will work in the Deceased Processing Section.

POSITION DUTIES

This position serves as a Lead Worker in the operations of the Deceased Processing Unit. The incumbent reports to the Deceased Processing Manager, and assists the Deceased Processing Manager in the effective operations of the Section. Primary duties include verification of deceased retiree payment folders upon notification of a retiree's death, preparation of active deceased benefit payments to member beneficiaries, verification of payments to dual-life annuity beneficiaries, and preparation of deceased manual vouchers for payment to beneficiaries and estates. Timely and accurate processing of transactions related to these processes are essential elements in aiding the Agency in meeting the objective of our Mission Statement, which is to effectively communicate to participants and employers information about benefits provide by the system.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

Experience: One (I) year experience in administrative or professional work.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience in administrative staff or professional work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 semester credit hours for each year of the required experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work that included regular use of independent judgment and analysis in applying and interpreting complex administrative plans, policies, rules or regulations or analysis of operational programs or procedures with recommendations for improvement on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience using Microsoft Office software (MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access);

2. At least 1 year of experience leading a program or supervising employees;

3. At least 1 year of experience preparing and/or approving calculations related to retirement/pension benefits, social security benefits, insurance or death benefits;

4. At least 1 year of customer service experience dealing with customers over the telephone and via email and US postal mail.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
