Main Purpose of Job

An Epidemiologist II is the full performance level of work assisting in the design, conduct and analysis of epidemiological studies and investigations for disease surveillance in a headquarters program of the Maryland Department of Health. The main purpose of this position is to conduct epidemiological studies by identifying causative agents related to substance use/opioid morbidity and mortality. This position assists in the design, collection, analysis, and dissemination of substance use/opioid morbidity and mortality data to provide the state with complete, accurate and timely substance use/opioid data to support Maryland's opioid response. This position plays an important role in analyzing substance use/opioid data to determine changes in trends and proposing practices or policies based on these findings to inform the state's goal of driving down opioid overdose. As part of the Maryland Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) program, which has an annual budget of $7,214,413, this position serves to enhance data-driven decisions of substance use/opioid prevention activities by providing data, analyzing data, and preparing data reports. This position engages closely with internal and external partners, including Maryland Department of Health (MDH) senior leadership, local health departments, and data stewards to ensure high-quality, comprehensive, and timely data analysis, dissemination, and usage to support statewide overdose prevention strategies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:    A Master’s degree in the field of Public Health from an accredited college or university with a minimum of three graduate courses in Epidemiology and one graduate course in Biostatistics.  A copy of your transcript must be attached to the application.

Experience:  Two years of experience in designing and conducting epidemiological studies and investigations for disease surveillance as an Epidemiologist after receipt of the Master’s degree.

NOTE: 

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Care Science classifications or Clinical Lab, Medical Scientists, or Bio Medical Lab Officer specialty codes in the health research field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
