Introduction

This is a MANAGEMENT SERVICE position with the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. The incumbent serves at the pleasure of the appointing authority.

LOCATION OF POSITION

There are multiple vacancies located throughout the State of Maryland. Therefore, the resulting eligible list will be used to fill current and future vacancies. When completing the application, please select all locations in which you are willing to work.

POSITION DUTIES

A Correctional Security Chief is the highest of three levels of managerial work involving the custody, security and control of adult inmates confined in a correctional facility. Correctional Security Chief has complete responsibility for security at institutions with an authorized correctional staff so large as to require three Correctional Officer Majors to effectively manage that staff. Employees in this classification manage the work of correctional officers on three shifts through the supervision of Correctional Officer Majors.

The work of a Correctional Security Chief is performed primarily in a correctional facility and the employee is exposed to inmates who may be abusive and hostile. When performing outside institutional rounds, a Correctional Security Chief is exposed to all types of weather conditions. A Correctional Security Chief receives managerial supervision from an Assistant Warden or Warden and is subject to call-in during emergencies and staffing shortages.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Correctional Training Commission regulation

Experience: Two years of experience as Correctional Officer Major managing the work of correctional officer supervisors in the custody and security of adult inmates

Notes:  1. Candidates may substitute additional education at an accredited college or university at the rate of sixty credit hours for only one year of the required experience, provided that a minimum of 15 credit hours are in the field of criminal justice or related social science.  

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional classifications or correctional specialty codes similar to Correctional Officer Major on a year-for-year basis. 

3. Experience served in positions similar to the rank of Correctional Officer Major in other jurisdictions will be considered on a year-for-year basis.
