Introduction

The Maryland State Retirement Agency is the administrator of the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System (“System”). The System is a defined benefit retirement system covering governmental employees within the State of Maryland. The System is a multi-employer, public employees’ defined benefit retirement system composed of twelve (12) separate retirement and pension systems with over 50 different rule sets.  The System has over 397,000 participants (customers), including 192,000 members who are actively employed and participating in the System, 165,000 payees who receive a monthly payment from the System, and 40,000 vested members who are no longer actively employed but have earned a benefit that will become payable at a future date.

Main Purpose of Job

This position serves as a team member in the Death Benefit and Refund Processing Section of the Benefits Processing Unit. This team of administrative and professional staff processes approximately 3,000 death benefit payments and 7,000 refund payments annually. The primary responsibilities of this accountant include: • accurately creating 1099-R tax documents for death benefit payments; • effectively coordinating collection efforts for the recovery of overpayments to deceased individuals; • correctly paying the death benefits provided by the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System; and • accurately reviewing transactions, calculation worksheets, and manual payment vouchers prepared by staff. This accountant will work with Agency staff, staff of Agency’s who participate in the Maryland State Retirement and Pension System, and representatives of deceased participants. To be successful in this role, the accountant must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with deadlines for meeting customer expectations. The accountant must possess excellent math, problem solving, and time management skills and have a passion for taking care of customers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university, including or supplemented by three credit hours in auditing.

Experience: None

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with thirty credit hours in Accounting and related courses, including or supplemented by three credit hours auditing, for the required education.

2. Applicants who have met the requirements for admission to the CPA examination prior to July 1, 1974 will be considered to have met the educational requirement referenced above.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding your qualifications. 

At least one year of demonstrated experience using Microsoft Excel and Word

At least one year of demonstrated experience processing or approving financial transactions

At least one year of demonstrated experience in a customer service environment

EXAMINATION PROCESS
