Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this part time (16 hrs per week) contractual position is to serve as the medical Deputy Health Officer for the Allegany County Health Department.  This position provides medical oversight for the health department programs, assists the Health officer in implementing State and local policies, and writes standing orders, as well as doctor's orders for individuals.  The Deputy Health Officer assists in assessing community health needs and guiding health department programs to meet those needs.  Provides consultation on medical issues to health department staff and the medical community, including medical guidance in the event of a disease outbreak or other public health emergency.  The Deputy Health Officer supervises staff and provides backup for the Health Officer, as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Qualified candidates must possess a Degree in medicine (M.D. or O.D.) from an accredited college or university and a license to practice medicine in the State of Maryland or be eligible for a Maryland Physician license.  

Qualified candidates must also possess one of the following:

  •  At least 5 years experience in the field of public health.

                   OR

  • A master's degree in public health and at least 2 years experience in the field of public health.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Applicants must be licensed by the Maryland Board of Physicians to practice medicine under Maryland State Law or be eligible to obtain licensure from the Maryland Board of Physician.  License to practice in Maryland MUST be obtained prior to hire.

SELECTION PROCESS

This is a Management Service position, and serves at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority.  A resume must accompany your application.

For education obtained outside the U.S., any job offer will be contingent on the candidate providing an evaluation for equivalency by a foreign credential evaluation service prior to starting employment (and may be requested prior to interview).

Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
