Main Purpose of Job
This is a professional position responsible for conducting face-to-face evidentiary hearings for individuals appealing the decision related to eligibility or termination of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Disability benefits.
POSITION DUTIES
Conducts hearings of claims in accordance with the due process standards as promulgated by the Social Security Administration; researches complex legal, medical and vocational issues; resolves conflicting evidence and testimony; provides advisory information to claimant and representative on appeals, additional evidence and rights and assists in processing special workloads.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION:
Possession of a
Bachelor's degree.
EXPERIENCE:
Two years of
administrative, librarian, teaching or rehabilitation work in education,
library or rehabilitation programs.
NOTES:
1. Additional experience
as defined above directly related to the position may be substituted for the
required Bachelor's degree at the rate of one year of experience for one year
of education.
2. Possession of a
Master's degree may be substituted for one year of the required
experience.
3. The above
requirements are set by the Maryland State Department of Education in
accordance with the Education Article, Section 2-104.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS

One year of the required experience must have been as a Vocational Rehabilitation Technical Specialist with DDS.
LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION
This recruitment is limited to current Permanent full-time Disability Determination Services (DDS) employees.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Individuals selected for positions with the Maryland State Department of Education's Disability Determination Services (DDS) will go through a complete Tier 2 federal background investigation. A suitability determination by the Social Security Administration is necessary to determine whether an employee can be issued credentials in order to have access to Social Security disability data, records, and systems.
