The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for a part-time contractual Travel Information Aide I position within the Office of Tourism Development. The position is located at the Mason Dixon Welcome Center on US 15 South in Emmitsburg, Maryland (Frederick Co).   The Welcome Center is open daily, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, 7 days a week, year-round. The incumbent will work 24 hours weekly (48 hours bi-weekly). 




The position is located at the Mason Dixon Welcome Center at 17300 Catoctin Mountain Highway on US 15 South in Emmitsburg, Maryland (Frederick Co).  

Emmitsburg is approximately 60 miles(1 hour and 15 minutes) driving distance from the Baltimore Metro Area. 

Main Purpose of Job

The primary functions of this position will be to provide inspirational travel and information to Maryland visitors, as well as, assist with the fulfillment operations by preparing and assembling kits and labels, receiving and ordering stock.  


Individuals will inform the traveling public about Maryland attractions, accommodations, recreational facilities, services and destinations; inform travelers about current events and activities; read maps and give specific directions to Maryland destinations, as well as provide assistance in reaching destinations. Inventory and supply management may be required; this may include shipment processing and lifting of bulk packaging, and operation of stock room equipment such as a hand truck and pallet jack.  


Qualified candidates must have:


Applicants must possess a high school diploma or a State GED certificate 



two (2) years of experience working in public information in a tourism-related industry (e.g., accommodations, campgrounds, travel development agency, information center, guide service, customer service, hospitality, etc.)


Candidates should be able to relate to the public in a friendly and competent manner; and must be able to interpret highway maps. Applicants must be able to work weekends since the center is open 7 days per week, year-round. Knowledge of Maryland history, geography and tourist attractions is required. Candidates must be computer literate and also be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.


Applicants must be willing to accept part-time contratual employment and willing to accept employment in Emmitsburg, MD which is approximately 60 miles(1 hour and 15 minutes) driving distance from the Baltimore Metro Area.

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
