The Maryland Office of People’s Counsel (MD OPC) is looking for an energetic, creative attorney with a strong interest in consumer advocacy to round out its team of talented and committed lawyers.

POSITION DUTIES

MD OPC, an independent State agency, is seeking applicants for an Assistant People’s Counsel position. MD OPC is a consumer protection agency that represents the interests of residential utility consumers before the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC), federal agencies and the appellate courts. An Assistant People’s Counsel may represent the agency in a variety of utility regulatory matters, utility consumer protection issues and rulemaking proceedings. OPC also investigates retail suppliers of gas and electricity regarding their compliance with the State’s consumer protection laws and the Commission’s laws and regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate must have a minimum of three years of litigation experience, admission to the Maryland Bar, and excellent analytical, writing and oral advocacy skills. Consumer protection and administrative litigation experience is a plus. Background in or familiarity with utility regulation, economics, engineering, and accounting also will enhance the application. Admission to the Maryland Bar and valid driver’s license are required. The candidate must be able to travel, including evenings and weekends, as required on an occasional basis.
