Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this full-time contractual position will be to support the Improved Pregnancy Outcomes (IPO) Grant within the Maternal, Child, and Elder Health Unit of the Division of Health Promotion and Community Services at St. Mary’s County Health Department. The Improved Pregnancy Outcomes Grant will provide women/families with community resources and referral to services, focus on safe sleep education and prevention of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and provide purchase of prenatal care and/or lab fees. This position will interact with private and public providers to identify the target population for the IPO grant, promote preventive health care and linkage to OBGYN providers, educate women and families on safe sleep practice, refer to local community resources, and ensure clients have received services through face to face visits and via the telephone. This position will transport clients. This position will also schedule dates, times, and locations for health education and promotion events, assist in preparing and assembling materials for health promotion education, explain and reinforce health services and resources available. This position will assist with administrative and outreach support as needed for the department and perform a range of duties under close supervision from the immediate supervisor. In addition, this position will learn to have regular and recurring interactions with diverse populations and will be responsible for the outreach and awareness activities related to the grant. The ideal candidate will be Spanish-speaking.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: None. 

Notes:  Candidates may substitute experience providing assistance to individuals in a health care or social services setting on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates may remain on the certified eligible list for a period of at least one year. The resulting certified eligible list for this recruitment may be used for similar positions in this or other State agencies.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
