Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this full-time position will be to provide health care and disease prevention information to medically underserved populations under the direction of the Asthma Community Health Nurse or other professional staff within the Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Division of the St. Mary’s County Health Department. This position will schedule dates, times and locations for asthma health education and promotion sessions, assist in preparing and assembling materials for asthma health education and promotion sessions, and explain and reinforce the health care services and resources available. This position will also interact with private and public entities to identify target populations for referral and will assist with administrative and outreach support as needed for the department. The involved programs and services are administered through program supervisors and other public health staff, and can include but are not limited to; Cancer Control Programs, Asthma Control Program, Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Program, Cardiovascular Health Programs, School and Child Care Center Wellness Program, and the Tobacco Enforcement Program. Performs a range of duties with direction from the immediate supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience in providing information on health care and disease prevention within the community.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute experience providing assistance to individuals in a health care or social services setting on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Health Services classifications or Health Services and specialty codes in the health related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

The desired candidate should possess:
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural influences
  • Experience identifying an individual's health needs and referring to the appropriate agencies
  • Experience maintaining documentation regarding activities
  • Experience working in a variety of environments

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
