LOCATION OF POSITION
MDH, Laboratory Services, Allegany, MD
This position functions as a full performance scientist at the Western Maryland Regional Laboratory (WMRL) performing environmental and clinical testing to support the activities of the regional public health partners. This position will perform routine and special chemical, physical and microbiological analyses on natural surface and drinking waters, industrial, landfill and sewage treatment plant effluents and report results to the appropriate regulatory agencies. In addition, this position will process and analyze dairy samples for bacteria and coliforms, inhibitors, somatic cells, and proper pasteurization. The position's responsibilities also include the duties of the prep/sterilization section of the regional laboratory including but not limited to sterilization, media preparation, inventory, and maintenance. This position will be cross trained in the clinical area to provide coverage during employee absences and participate in weekend rotational coverage of clinical and environmental microbiology.
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.
Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The desired candidate should possess the following:
Knowledge of the principles of chemistry and microbiology techniques
Knowledge of quality control and quality assurance procedures
Ability to distinguish and differentiate colors in order to perform analysis
