Main Purpose of Job

Under the general supervision of the Division Chief of the Division of New Born Screening, this position serves as a first-line technical and scientific supervisor of employees in MSMS NBS Section of the NBS Division. This position directly oversees the scientific accuracy and reliability of public health Newborn Screening for Organic Acidemia, Fatty Acid Oxidation and Amino Acid Disorders. This position is responsible for continuous monitoring of the section to improve quality and efficiency of the testing in the section. This position provides technical and regulatory oversight and consultation, administration and management, employee supervision and training as Technical Supervisor of the Hereditary Disorders Program for screening all newborn babies as directed by state law and by the Governor's Commission on Hereditary Disorders as part of the Laboratories Administration's quality public health laboratory activities to promote, protect, and preserve the health and well-being of the people in Maryland from communicable and hereditary disease, and from environmental hazards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Genetics, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Medical Technology, Pharmacy or Zoology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four years of experience working in a chemistry laboratory performing analytical tests on environmental, biological or multi-matrix samples; or four years of experience working in a medical or public health laboratory performing diagnostic or public health testing on human specimens.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute additional graduate education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 credit hours in the above noted disciplines for each year of the required experience for up to two years of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health Science Research Officer classifications or Medical Laboratory Specialists specialty codes in the Science related field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess the following:

  • Supervisory experience in a high throughput clinical laboratory
  • Strong Chemistry/Biochemistry (analytical or clinical) background

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
