Introduction

This is a part-time, 12 month position at the Maryland School for the Deaf.

Main Purpose of Job

This position functions as a part time driver (20 - 25 hours each week) to make deliveries or pick up mail and/or packages & other materials between the MSD Frederick and Columbia Campuses, State offices in Annapolis and Baltimore, and other local areas to include but not limited to the U. S. Postal Service offices, bookstores, Home Depot & office, and/or computer supply locations. Incumbent will make deliveries on Columbia Campus and maintain cleanliness and safety of Columbia fleet vehicles.

POSITION DUTIES

Conduct periodic safety inspections of all Columbia Campus school vehicles to include checking windshield wipers, brakes, all lights, etc. & report any inoperative equipment to the Maintenance Supervisor for further processing; ensure each vehicle is driven to the emission control station for testing within the specified timeframe.  Check vehicles prior to trips to ensure fluid levels are adequate and vehicle is road worthy.  Clean vehicles.  Deliver packages and mail between campuses.  Make weekly deliveries to Annapolis.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Must be willing to learn American Sign Language.  This position requires that the employee be able to lift 50 lbs.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.  Driving records are reviewed periodically.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a contractual employee who has worked 120 days in a 12 month period. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
