Introduction

This is a 12-month position at the Maryland School for the Deaf – Columbia Campus.

Main Purpose of Job

This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising the housekeeping staff ,as well as work alongside them daily.

POSITION DUTIES

This position is responsible for planning, coordinating and supervising the housekeeping staff, as well as work alongside them daily.  Must schedule the major housekeeping projects in coordination with other departments within the school as well as evaluate the long term custodial needs of the buildings.  Must inspect the buildings on campus on a daily basis to determine if they are being properly maintained or need any special or additional attention.  Administer and manage all activities related to personnel management including approval of overtime, leave use and biweekly timesheets.  Plan and participate in the in-service training for the staff and be responsible to evaluate and counsel employees when necessary in accordance with applicable MSD and state personnel rules and regulations.  Responsible to inventory and order daily supplies and distribute supplies and equipment to staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:  None.

Experience:

One year of experience supervising housekeeping and custodial activities at a small or medium State institution.

OR

Seven years full-time experience in a large scale housekeeping operation at a school, hospital, hotel or other institution, four years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

LIMITATIONS ON SELECTION

Must be willing to learn American Sign Language.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Work involves special physical demands such as lifting/pushing 50 pounds or more. Must be able to climb 6' ladders to wash walls, light fixtures, and clean interior/exterior windows, etc.  Must be able to sit, squat, or stand for long periods of time.  Must be able to safely use, adjust, and maintain manual and power tools and equipment used in cleaning.

Must be able to use a computer for the purpose of placing orders and reviewing staff timesheets.

Employee may be required to work on evenings, weekends, or holidays based on staffing needs.

New hires are subject to a criminal background investigation at their own expense.  (Maryland Code, Family Law Article 1, Sections 5-560-568)

Candidates will need to provide three letters of recommendation.
