Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of
these positions is to serve as an entry level Health Physicist Trainee. The
first position will learn to perform recognition, evaluation and control of
radiological hazards to employees and the general public. Specifically, this
position provides, scientific and technical reviews of detailed applications
for new radioactive materials licenses, radioactive material license renewals,
amendments and terminations, and to conduct on-site inspections of new
facilities in order to qualify them as physically adequate and with personnel
competent to receive and use radioactive materials. Facilities include
hospitals, industrial firms, medical offices, laboratories and other facilities
where the environment includes exposure to radioactive materials. The incumbent in this position will be responsible for the technical review of radioactive
sealed sources and devices containing radioactive material requested to be
certified to be safe for manufacture and distribution in and from the State of
Maryland. The incumbent in this position will also be required to
participate and gain the required competency in many important technical roles
in Calvert Cliffs and Peach Bottom nuclear power plant accident drills, on a
24/7 basis, in order to protect the health and safety of the citizens of the
State of Maryland.
The second position
will learn to perform inspections, investigations and other regulatory
activities, such as processing registrations, preventive maintenance and
certifications, to protect the public and occupational personnel from
unnecessary exposure from x-ray producing radiation machines. The
incumber in this position will be required to respond to radiation emergencies
as necessary.
These positions will
perform work which involve exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings
during radiation machines inspections. The incumbent's duties
may involve potential radiation exposure during routine inspections and
emergency responses. During site inspections protective equipment may be required
to reduce exposure to ionizing radiation to minimal levels using time,
distance, shielding and lead aprons. This position requires the
incumbent to climb ladders, lift heavy equipment and travel to various
inspection sites in the State of Maryland.
The incumbents in
these positions will occasionally work after hours and on-call 24/7 for
Radiological Emergencies and occasional overnight travel and stays
required. Incumbents will be required to drive a state vehicle, and
therefore, must maintain a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State
of Maryland with 5 or less points on their driving record.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 credit hours in mathematical, physical or biological sciences.
Experience: None.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute experience in performing the recognition, evaluation and control of radiological hazards to employees and the general public on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Health and Medical Physicist classifications or Health and Medical Physicist specialty codes in the Physicist field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Health Science or Physics;
- Strong written and oral communication skills;
- Strong computer skills with a proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint:
- Experience generating database reports:
- Detailed oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks;
- Willingness to work as a team member;
- Experience providing service to customers in a professional setting which must have included personal interaction with members of the general public or other customers.
