Main Purpose of Job
The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions at Fort Frederick State Park Complex in Big Pool, Maryland. You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the position(s) of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment. Please review the main purpose of each job closely before applying.
PARK RANGER (12 vacancies) ($11.75 to $15 / hour)
A Seasonal Park Ranger is a temporary, introductory level of work in the operation of a State park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants work weekends, holidays and evenings as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Provide visitors with park information and regulations
● Register campers
● Monitor and cleaning of campgrounds, bath houses and restrooms
● General maintenance of park trails, public facilities, staff buildings and DNR vessels and vehicles
● Monitor recreational activities in the park, including but not limited to hunting, fishing, hiking and biking
● May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER (7 vacancies) ($11.75 to $14 / hour)
The Seasonal Park Maintenance position is responsible for the maintenance of grounds, facilities and equipment in a park or recreation area. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Clean restrooms, shelters and campsites
● Refill bathroom supplies
● Removal of litter
● Maintenance of facilities and grounds
● Mow and trim grass
● Painting, electric, carpentry and plumbing work
● Upkeep of vehicles, equipment and vessels
● Use of hand tools and operation of power equipment
● Provide visitors with park information
● May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
HISTORICAL INTERPRETER (6 vacancies) ($11.75 to $14 / hour)
The Historical Interpreter presents living history and educational programs to park visitors. Work is performed outdoors and indoors in buildings that are not climate controlled under various weather conditions, in historically appropriate clothing. Applicants work weekends, holidays and some evenings as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
● Communicate historical information through living history and educational programs to park visitors of diverse ages and backgrounds.
● Assist in the organization and operation of historical events
● Able to learn and apply a variety of 18th-century living history skills.
● Perform daily routine cleaning and maintenance of historic buildings
● Able to read and comprehend both primary and secondary historical sources utilizing research techniques
● Requires the wearing of historically appropriate clothing
● Required, after appropriate training, to safely demonstrate, use and maintain a variety of historic weapons following Maryland Park Service Standards for Historic Weapons Use
● Provide visitors with park information
TRAIL TECHNICIAN (4 vacancies) ($11.75 to 15 / hour)
The Trail Technician is responsible for the maintenance and construction associated with a large trail network within a State Park. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Perform trail maintenance and construction
• Mow and trim grass and vegetation along park trails
• Clear downed trees off park trails
• Construct and repair trail bridges, as needed
• Coordinate and lead monthly-volunteer trail work days
• Safe use of hand tools, power tools, and motorized trail equipment for a full eight-hour shift (with breaks)
• Hike trails of varying difficulty
• Applicants must be able to lift 50 lbs.

SELECTION PROCESS
BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
