LOCATION OF POSITION

Berlin, MD (Worcester County)

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Park Service is currently recruiting for multiple seasonal contractual positions at Assateague State Park in Berlin, Maryland. You must indicate on the Supplemental Questionnaire the position(s) of interest in order to be considered for this recruitment. Please review the main purpose of each job closely before applying.

PARK RANGER (8 vacancies) ($15 / hour)
A Seasonal Park Ranger is a temporary, introductory level of work in the operation of a State park. Daily shift assignments may rotate, areas of work include campground operations, grounds work, facility cleaning, traffic control, horse safety and education. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions and applicant will be exposed to all weather conditions including extreme temperatures and biting insects. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Part time or full time available. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Provide visitors with park information and regulations
• Provide traffic direction
• Register campers and operate computerized reservation system
• Preparation of reports and cash handling
• Clean campground bath houses, restrooms, and shower facilities
• Employ management tactics for wildlife safety (including horse, deer, and birds)
• Intervene in wildlife-human interactions
• Conduct campground check-in and check-out procedures
• Monitor and cleanup of parking lots, beach, trails, and campground areas
• General maintenance of park trails, public facilities, staff buildings and vehicles
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Assist in management of camp hosts and volunteers
• May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

PARK JANITORIAL WORKER (16 vacancies) ($16 / hour)
The Park Janitorial Worker is a hardworking, meticulous, and friendly employee that is responsible for the maintenance of park restroom and shower facilities, grounds, and equipment. Maintains bathroom and grounds daily for patrons and staff to department maintenance standards. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Monitors supply inventory and communicates needs to supervisor. Reports necessary facility repairs. Performs other duties as assigned. This position is supervised by the Park Janitorial Supervisor. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Part time or full time available. Duties generally include, but are not limited to:
• Clean and monitor restrooms and shower facilities
• Refill bathroom supplies
• Removal of litter
• Maintenance of facilities and grounds
• May include mowing and trimming of grass
• May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle, UTV, or golf cart. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

PARK JANITORIAL SUPERVISOR (1 vacancy) ($17 to $19 / hour)
The Janitorial Supervisor directly supervises and coordinates work activities of cleaning personnel in the park. Plan and prepare employee work schedules. Coordinate activities with other departments to ensure that services are provided in an efficient and timely manner. Inspect work performed to ensure that it meets specifications and established standards. Provide quality control and perform and assist with cleaning duties to achieve standards. Position is full time. Duties generally include, but are not limited to:
• Oversees Campground Janitorial Crew
• Provide training to janitorial crew
• Performs quality control checks and cleans bathhouses, shower facilities, and grounds
• Coordinates with maintenance staff when facility repair is needed
• Orders and delivers supplies to crew
• Creates and coordinates schedules
• May include mowing and trimming of grass
• May interact with park guests and provide general information
• May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle, UTV, or golf cart. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

PARK NATURALIST (6 vacancies) ($15 / hour)
The Seasonal Park Naturalist develops and leads interpretive programming and wildlife education at a State Park. Daily shift assignments may rotate, areas of work include environmental education and interpretive programming, exhibit staffing, and wildlife safety and education patrols. Work is performed indoors and outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Part time or full time available. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Develop and present interpretive and environmental education programs
• Employ management tactics for wildlife safety including wild horse education, preventative actions, monitoring, and data collection as the park’s Pony Patrol.
• Intervene in wildlife-human interactions
• Assist with volunteers and youth programs
• Develop and maintains exhibits, park bulletin boards and educational materials
• Advise the public of general park rules and regulations
• Operation and maintenance of nature centers, buildings and grounds
• Clean restrooms/shower facilities
• May include live animal care and handling associated with the Scales and Tales program
• May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

CAMPGROUND OFFICE ATTENDANT / CAMPER CONTACT ATTENDANT
(19 vacancies) ($15 / hour)
The Campground Office Attendant / Camper Contact Attendant is responsible for welcoming visitors to the park, collecting various service charges and registering campers. Work is performed primarily indoors. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Part time or full time available. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Answer phones / provide information to visitors
• Register campers
• Clean restrooms/shower facilities and park facility buildings
• Operate a computerized reservation system
• Handle money and provide change
• Assist with facility upkeep and maintenance

LIFEGUARD – OCEAN BEACH (20 vacancies) ($15 to $18 / hour)
The Ocean Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring visitors have a safe and enjoyable recreational experience at an oceanfront beach. Work is performed primarily outdoors under various weather conditions. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Part time or full time available. Duties may vary for each facility and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Monitor swimmers
• Participate in training exercises and programs
• Maintain beach area and equipment
• Provide information and assistance to visitors
• Respond to emergencies
• Prepare written reports
• Must be certified by a national agency in Lifeguard Training, First Aid and CPR, as well as pass a physical evaluation, swim test and written test. Candidates may be certified after hire.
• May be assigned duties that require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

CONCESSION ATTENDANT (18 vacancies) ($15 / hour)
The Concession Attendant provides customer service to visitors in the park’s gift shop and restaurant. Work is performed primarily indoors. Applicants must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Part time or full time available. Duties generally include, but are not limited to:
• Operate a cash register in the sale of food and park merchandise
• Maintain and stock inventory of supplies, materials and products
• Prepare and cook food
• Serve ice cream and novelty items
• Clean and maintain facility interior and exterior
• Assist with litter pickup near concession facility
• Assist park visitors with information

CONCESSION MANAGER (1 position) ($16 to $18 / hour)
The Concession Manager manages food service and retail operation including preparation of hot and cold foods, merchandising of gift shop items, ordering and inventory maintenance, invoice reconciliation, cash handling, and supervision of staff. Position is full time. Work is performed indoors. Applicants must work weekends, evenings, and holidays as scheduled. Duties may vary and generally include, but are not limited to:
• Prepare and cook food; oversee quality control of food service operation
• Oversee cleanliness and safety of concessions operation
• Order merchandise for sale and maintain inventory
• Operate cash registers and reconcile cash and credit card sales
• Bookkeeping
• Supervise work of concession attendants
• Assist park visitors
• Work with vendors

Education: None.

Experience: None.

SELECTION PROCESS

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
