Western Region- Green Ridge State Forest / Potomac-Garrett State Forest

Main Purpose of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Services Unit is currently accepting applications for Seasonal Maintenance Assistants at Green Ridge State Forest in Flintstone, Maryland (Allegany County) and Potomac-Garrett State Forest in Oakland, Maryland (Garrett County). The positions entail independently performing moderately complex tasks in maintenance work, campsite maintenance, rendering routine preventive maintenance, and making minor repairs or improvements to buildings, fixtures mechanical equipment, grounds, and roadways. Other duties may include but are not limited to snow removal, planting trees, operating chainsaws, habitat improvement projects, boundary line maintenance, and wildland fire suppression. Successful candidates should be able to lift to 70lbs, and willing to work in inclement weather and rugged terrain. Selected candidates may be required to work weekends and/or holidays.

The positions in Potomac-Garrett State Forest will serve as crew chief, leading lower-level maintenance workers in maintaining buildings, grounds, facilities, and equipment of the State Forest.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: One year of experience operating small equipment such as small tractors, mowers, chainsaws.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience completing maintenance and safely operating equipment such as bulldozers, plows, large trucks, etc.

Knowledge of agricultural practices of the more common species of plant life, and wildlife indigenous to the state and its geography; of fire suppression practices.

Ability to work independently on specialized assignments.

Ability to work effectively with fellow workers; to deal with the public.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in these positions will be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle.  Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program (the Program), have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.

Leave may be granted to a temporary/contractual employee who works an average of at least 12 hours per week. This leave accrues at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
