MDH/Caroline County Health Department, Environmental Health Division, Denton, Maryland

Main Purpose of Job

This position will be responsible for the protection of public health, more desirably obtained through voluntary compliance with the existing regulations or, when necessary, through compliance procedures established in regulation and law. This position will direct and train lower-level staff members, while planning and coordinating activities involving such staff. This position will also be responsible for issuing food permits, as well as for conducting inspections and investigations of complaints and/or outbreaks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists, under the licensing requirements for Environmental Health Specialists.

Experience: Two years of experience performing inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with environmental health laws and regulations.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute possession of a Master of Public Health or a Master of Science degree from an accredited college or university for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a Commissioned Officer in Environmental Engineering classifications or Environmental Engineering specialty codes in the Engineering and Natural Resources field of work, on a year-for-year basis, for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should have supervisory experience, as well as experience conducting inspections and investigating complaints and/or outbreaks in an environmental setting (i.e. food facilities, pet shop inspections, well final inspections).

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
