Main Purpose of Job

This position functions as an Environmental Health Specialist Supervisor for Howard County Health Department, Bureau of Environmental Health, Food Protection Program, a regulatory agency charged with responsibility for prevention of disease transmission through environmental factors. Various inspections and complaint follow-ups are conducted on licensed Retail Food Service Facilities in Howard County in accordance with applicable regulatory standards intended to protect the public’s health. The position supervises Environmental Health Specialists (EHS), is responsible for oversight of facilities with expired licenses, monitoring follow-up inspections to ensure they occur, and assisting non-supervisory EHS with issues during inspections/investigations. Additionally, this person will be the Local Standardization Officer (LSO) when the current LSO’s certification expires.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Determined by the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists under the licensing requirements for Environmental Health Specialists.

Experience: Two years of experience performing inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with environmental health laws and regulations.

Notes:

1.  Candidates may substitute possession of a Master of Public Health or Master of Science degree from an accredited college or university for one year of the required experience.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Environmental Engineering classifications or Environmental Engineering specialty codes in the Engineering and Natural Resources field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Desired qualifications:

- Experience going through the standardization process and has extensive knowledge of the food regulations (COMAR 10.15.03)

- Strong Organizational skills

- Strong communication skills and the ability to train new staff

- Strong computer skills

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess and maintain a current license as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist from the Maryland Board of Environmental Health Specialists. A copy of your license or license number should be uploaded on your application.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
