Main Purpose of Job
POSITION DUTIES
Employees in this
classification provide services to law enforcement, the public, State
employees and other authorized agencies. The candidate for the
position must be able to multi-task and perform operations on numerous systems
to include:
- Computer aided
dispatch/records management systems;
- Multi-channel police radio
equipment;
- Multi-line telephone systems;
- Security camera systems;
- Building access control
systems;
- Fire monitoring systems;
and
- Criminal justice information
systems.
Duties for this position
include but are not limited to:
- Receives, identifies and
accurately evaluates emergency and routine calls for police services, routes
911 calls for Fire and EMS services, refers calls to other agencies and makes
required notifications as appropriate.
- Monitors and maintains
the status of all police personnel and units as to location and availability.
- Determines appropriate
personnel and equipment to be dispatched using voice radio and computer aided
dispatch system.
- Uses established
policies & procedures, independent judgment, common sense to make rapid and
accurate decisions in dispatching police resources.
- Performs multiple,
routine and complex dispatch tasks simultaneously.
- Responds calmly and effectively
in emergency and stress situations.
- Effectively communicates
and coordinates in a teamwork environment with co-workers, other agencies,
departments and the public, exercising strong customer service and group
dynamic skills.
- Works with documents,
reads maps, manuals, memorandums, legal resources, policies & procedures
and posted information.
- Monitors multiple
police, fire and emergency radio frequencies.
- Initiates, receives and
interprets information from various law enforcement computerized database
systems.
- Monitors facility
security and various alarm systems.
- Performs research and
clerical work such as preparation of logs, reports, forms and update of
information and files in a timely manner.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: One year of experience operating multi-channel radios, keyboards or computer terminals in a law enforcement or related operation.
Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Operations Specialist classifications or Signal Corps, Cyberspace Support, or Communications specialty codes in the communications field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination for this position will consist of a rating of your education, training and experience related to the requirements of the position. Successful candidates will be placed on the employment eligibility list categorized as BEST QUALIFIED, BETTER QUALIFIED, or QUALIFIED. The eligibility list will be valid for one year and may be extended. The list will be used by the hiring authority to select employees for interviews. Eligible lists may be used to fill future vacancies of the same classification.
You MUST possess the minimum qualifications before you may be selected for a State job – Verification will be completed by the appointing authority. If you are scheduled to complete an educational or licensing requirement within six months of the examination, you may participate in the examination process. Permanent State employees may also complete necessary experience requirements within six months of the date of an examination. Credit is given for relevant part-time, temporary or volunteer experience based on the number of hours worked per week. You must include on your application the time spent on such activity.
