Main Purpose of Job

Act as the clinical dietitian/nutritionist for the Department in all matters involving nutritional therapy. Provide clinical nutrition consultations to youth, support nursing and medical staff with expert nutritional assistance. Annually develop and coordinate two four-week cycle menus that comply with the Child Nutrition Program, Current Dietary Guidelines and the applicable Dietary Reference Intakes for the population served. Assist the Director of Food and Nutrition Service in the administrative details required to implement the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program at all residential sites operated by the Department of Juvenile Services.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Provides clinical nutrition services for all residential sites. Provide nutritional education for youth as needed.
  • Annually writes two 4-week menu cycles that are in compliance with Child Nutrition Program (CNP), Current DGA, and applicable (Dietary Reference Intakes) DRI. Develop applicable recipes for menu. Manage taste testing of new menu items.
  • Provide Nutrition expertise to all residential facilities in support of their Wellness Policy Tasks.
  • Develop monthly cultural theme meal in an effort to expose youth to different cultural foods.
  • Develops materials for in-service training of food service personnel. Assists with in-service training as needed.
  • Conducts dietary department on site reviews as needed.
  • Initiates, organizes, and participates in staff meetings, conferences, and continuing education as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   Determined by the Maryland State Board of Dietetic Practice under the licensing requirements for Nutritionists and Dietitians.

Experience: Four years of experience providing professional nutrition or dietetic services, two years must have been in a public health or community setting.

Notes:

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Community Health, Nutrition or Public Health for one year of required general professional nutrition or dietetic services experience.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate degree from an accredited college or university in Community Health, Nutrition or Public Health for two years of the required general professional nutrition or dietetic services experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Dietitian and Nutritionist classification or Dietitian and Nutritionist specialty codes in the Dietitian field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong preference will be given to applicants that possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding these qualifications.  

  • Possession of a Serv Safe certification within the past three years
  • Experience with implementation of the federal Child Nutrition Program regulations.
  • Experience using the Nutrikids software to analyze menus.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Dietitian or Nutritionist from the Maryland State Board of Dietetic Practice, 4201 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215 prior to permanent appointment.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants who meet the Minimum Qualifications will be placed on the eligible list categorized as Best Qualified, Better Qualified, or Qualified. Candidates shall be certified to the eligible list for a year.
