Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Prince Frederick, MD (Calvert County)

Main Purpose of Job

The incumbent will work as a Forest Technician in Calvert/Prince George's County project. This position will operate from the Calvert County Forest Service office located in Prince Frederick, Maryland. Examples of job duties include assisting a Forester with collecting technical forest data for Stewardship Plans, forest fire protection, assist with tree planting programs and implement urban forestry programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 credit hours must be in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.

Experience: None.

Notes: 

1. Candidates may substitute additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Associate degree in Forestry.
2. Knowledge of how to conduct Forest inventory data collection.
3. Knowledge or coursework using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
4. Knowledge or course studies in tree identification.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
