Introduction

This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. Future vacancies may also be filled via other recruitments. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

Main Purpose of Job

The incumbent will serve as the Training Coordinator at the Maryland Forest Service Headquarters Office in Annapolis; office location may be negotiable with job offer. The Training Coordinator is responsible for managing the Maryland Licensed Tree Expert program statewide organizing and implementing training sessions across all Forest Service program areas and for maintaining training records of Forest Service employees. The Training Coordinator also works with Forest Service program managers and staff to identify training needs of Forest Service employees. By carrying out these responsibilities, the Training Coordinator ensures that the licensed tree experts and their businesses can meet the new mandate for continuing education requirements. This requirement must be met for tree experts to renew their license and legally work in Maryland. The Training Coordinator manages the continuing education event catalog, maintains the databases, prepares reports, develops procedures, manages the outreach budget, and assists with license renewals. The position implements and ensures compliance with the existing tree expert statute and regulations and recommends changes to policy and the regulations as needed. This position would work with volunteer fire departments, federal agencies (US Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife, etc.), other state and local agencies and non-governmental organizations to promote, implement and enforce the Licensed Tree Expert program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a high school diploma or a State high school equivalence certificate.

Experience: Seven years of experience either performing, or supervising workers performing technical natural resources or conservation work.

Notes: 

1. Pertinent volunteer and/or part-time experience is acceptable. Please document the number of hours spent per week in this type of experience on the application form (MS 100).

2. Applicants may substitute vocational or college education in a natural resources discipline for experience at the rate of one year of education for one year of experience.

3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.   

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Forestry and/or urban forestry knowledge and/or experience

Superior organizational skills which include but are not limited to, organizing meetings and events, training sessions, databases/spreadsheets, and licensing and training compliance

Exceptional communication skills
