Main Purpose of Job

The (administrative) forensic coordinator functions as the social work member of the forensic specialty team within the Office of Forensic Services at Springfield Hospital Center. This Office provides evaluative and consultative services to Courts around the State, in addition to operating in a liaison role with clinical teams at the Hospital regarding legal issues faced by their patients. Along with the Director of the Office of Forensic Services, this position provides leadership and educational services to clinical and administrative staff, and this position represents the Hospital at Statewide meetings and in county-level forensic meetings. The forensic coordinator participates in pretrial evaluations, represents the Hospital in administrative hearings, testifies as needed, and assists teams in preparing patients for release.

Some job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: 
  • Coordinates ambulatory evaluations with the admission office staff. 
  • Provides liaison and consultative services to clinical teams regarding the aftercare needs of forensic patients in the context of the patients' legal situations and clinical needs. 
  • Assists the Director of Forensic Services and the Forensic Secretary in tracking forensic patients, coordinating and assigning cases, scheduling outpatient evaluations, and responding to data requests from Hospital Administration and the MDH Office of Court-Ordered Evaluations and Placements. (OCEP)
  • Presents the Hospital's position on patients' level of care needs at the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Hearings by interviewing and cross examining witnesses, reviewing records, overseeing the development of release conditions, presenting opening and closing statements, etc. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Determined by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners under the licensing requirements for Social Workers.

Experience: Two years of experience rendering clinical social work services in a health care or treatment setting subsequent to the receipt of an approved Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited college or university. 

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Social Work classifications or Social Work specialty codes in the Social Science, Psychology, and Welfare field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should be familiar with Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) processes. In addition, the desired candidate should also have experience with reviewing court documents such as statement of charges, court orders for commitment to MDH and detainers, etc.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates must be licensed as a Certified Social Worker or Certified Social Worker, Clinical by the Maryland State Board of Social Work Examiners prior to appointment to a position in State service. Applicants who do not have a license may also apply pending receipt of the required license. When the license is obtained, submit a copy to the Maryland Department of Health Testing Unit.

2. Candidates appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess an appropriate operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
