Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose for this position as a Clinical Nurse Specialist’s (Psychiatric) is responsible for the quality of nursing care, staff training and staff development in the provision of nursing car utilizing best practice. Key elements of CNS practice are to create environments through mentoring and system changes that empower nurses to develop caring, evidence-based practices to alleviate patient distress, facilitate ethical decision making and respond to diversity. As a clinical educator, the CNS promotes current nursing knowledge, techniques, improves health care delivery and practice standards in accordance with nursing and hospital philosophy, and the Nurse Practice Act Standards. The CNS reports to the Director of Nursing or designee. The clinical nurse specialist does not supervise but is responsible for the quality of nursing care, staff training and staff development. This process is achieved by the collaborative exchange of information with the Nursing Administrative Team, Registered Nurse Managers and Registered Nurse Supervisors and is provided across all nursing shifts. The foundation of a recovery oriented environment in respect and a commitment to safety in the least restrictive manner possible. Intermittently will serve as the nurse in charge, in count, to assure a therapeutic milieu.

Some job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Observing application of policy to all nursing classifications roles/functions.
  • Continual assessment of training/educational needs.
  • Assistance with proper and complete documentation, and auditing of documentation.
  • Real time training/coaching/education. 
  • Ensuring correct application of policy/procedure and providing direction as needed.
  • Regular and timely written/verbal communication with the Nursing Administrative Team (NAT) to ensure training/education needs are addressed in a timely manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:   A Master’s degree in Nursing or a health-related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of experience providing nursing care.

Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in Nursing classifications or Nursing and Hospital Administration specialty codes in the Nursing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess:
  • Nursing experience in a psychiatric hospital setting

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing, 4140 Patterson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21215.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

3. Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation training and maintain current certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in and, therefore, may be required to provide the facility with a phone number at which they can be reached.

2. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
